Escape! is is a 1978 game from Silas Warner and one of the first, if not the first 3D games, which many consider a precursor and influence his later game Castle Wolfenstein. It also likely influenced the the name of the first campaign of Wolfenstein 3D: "Escape from Castle Wolfenstein" and the name of the first mission in RTCW: Escape!).

The concept was that the player was trapped in a building, represented by a 3D maze (much like the ones later appear in Wolfenstein 3D) and has to find a way out. The player only has a 'pass' which he uses to get past 'guards/people along the way. Some of the guards always tell the truth, some always tell lies, and some may do either one.

Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein became top-down maze games, but kept the ideas of passes or disguises to get past guards. While Wolfenstein 3D dropped the stealth/adventure approach for pure run and gun mechanics (though there were plans to incorporate those features, as well as surrendering enemies before they were dropped).
