This article is about the long-ranged rifle in Return to Castle Wolfenstein. For the version seen in Wolfenstein, see Kar98.

The Mauser rifle is a powerful long-range rifle in Return to Castle Wolfenstein which is able to mount a scope.

Overview

The weapon is based on Karabiner 98 Kurz, the most common weapon issued to German soldiers during the Second World War. While it does not feature any animation for operating the bolt action, it does have a short timeout after each shot during which a sound like operating a bolt can be heard, which gives it a slow rate of fire. However, it is both powerful and accurate, and once the scope add-on is picked up it is a very capable sniper rifle. In the enemys hand, this is a deadly long range rifle, even most of them are not scoped.

Location

It is first obtained during the "Ominous Rumors" mission, later on can be obtained from enemy snipers. After picking up the scope, the unscoped version is no longer usable.

Notes

  • This gun uses 7.92mm rounds and has a 10 round magazine with a maximum reserve supply of 200 rounds.
  • Be aware of this weapon! Even without scope, the enemies who has it can hit you with pin point accuracy, the rifle shot can be heard from a distance, so you can carefully counter the sniper with your own rifle, though its risky; or run right and left to avoid rifle fire, until you get close you can use MP 40 or FG 42 to eliminate the threat. Otherwise the rifle user can kill you in 4-6 shots in higher difficulty, and this can occur in 15 seconds if not careful.

Behind the scenes

  • There are some claims that during development the weapon was intended to be an American M1 Garand rifle, hence the curious reload (in which the stripper clip is inserted into the rifle), large capacity and lack of a bolt-operating animation.Template:Citation
