The article makes mention of a toggle lock not being all that reliable, but for pistol calibers like 7.65mm Luger, 9mm Luger and .45ACP, I'd argue it works just fine. Shooting many old war bringbacks and commercial Luger pistols, you might get the idea that it's inherently not very reliable, but really, as long as the springs and the magazine hasn't seen over 50 years of use, and you've taken reasonable care of it, it ought to work fine. For example, if your Luger pistol frequently short-strokes or randomly locks open, you could probably fix that by replacing the antique and worn out springs, and getting a brand new magazine (many springs and magazines are near or even over 100 years old).

Browning and Walther style slides would be more practical in the end though, fulfilling the same duty while being cheaper to make, and easier to take care of (fewer and less complex springs, less tight and critical fitting, less bearing surfaces). I think it's safe to assume that the Luger design was chosen because it would be more visually appealing and distinct, because really, few pistols have such a unique appearance. 95.109.102.216 21:44, February 9, 2017 (UTC)
